MDA was the prime contractor for the Canadian Space Agency RADARSAT-1 program and
supplied the complete SAR payload including the antenna and the ground segment.
The RADARSAT-1 SAR antenna, which was launched into low-earth orbit in late 1995
and which has operated flawlessly since, is a slotted waveguide planar array operating
at C-Band, with a 15m x 1.5m aperture formed by the deployment of four rectangular
panels. It was the first such satellite to provide beam steering for enhanced coverage
accessibility in both the strip-map and scan-SAR modes of operation, for image resolutions
varying from 8m to 100m.
