Hyperspectral technology is viewed as the next step in the field of Earth Observation. For the past 4 years, MDA has performed concept studies and mission definition studies for the Canadian Space Agency to develop the Canadian Hyperspectral Environment and Resources Observer or HERO.

HERO will provide the Hyperspectral user community with high quality information on the surface of the Earth, specifically the plants and materials that cover it and their changes with time. The mission consists of a single small satellite in a sun-synchronous orbit carrying an advanced Hyperspectral imaging payload.

The mission will provide users with weekly re-look and monthly re-visit imaging opportunities, delivering information products and services through a Canadian ground segment and associated network of value added service providers. Users will receive imagery and interpreted environmental management information on a target and area subscription basis both in Canada and worldwide.
