MDA To Provide Critical Part Of Information Solution For Japanese Space Program

Richmond, B.C. - MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd. (TSX: MDA), a provider of essential information solutions, announced today that it has received an Authorization To Proceed (ATP) from Mitsubishi Electric Corporation of Japan to start work on the expected CAD $15.4M contract to provide six critical elements of the real-time information solution which controls the precise maneuvering as Japan's unmanned H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV) docks with the International Space Station.

The functionality provided by MDA incorporates unique features for observing and controlling the rate of movement of the spacecraft to ensure safe maneuvering as the HTV approaches the Space Station. The HTV will be used to transfer the Japanese Experimental Module (JEM) and other supplies to the Space Station. The use of unmanned transfer vehicles is also being planned by NASA for future Space Station supply missions when the shuttle fleet is retired.

This is a significant contract for MDA's Montrýal operation, which was acquired from EMS last year. The award further affirms MDA's unique capabilities in providing multiple components of the information solution required for close proximity maneuvering of spacecraft - a key element in future space exploration missions and in-orbit spacecraft servicing applications.
