The coveted Silver Snoopy awards were presented by U.S. Astronaut
Nancy Currie at the MD Robotics facility located in Brampton, Ontario. Snoopy,
of the comic strip Peanuts, has been the unofficial mascot of NASAs
astronaut corps since the earliest days of human space flight. Recipients were given
a silver pin depicting the famous beagle wearing a space suit. All the pins have
flown on a previous Space Shuttle mission. The awardees also received a framed certificate
and a congratulatory letter signed by the presenting astronaut.
The ultimate success of the International Space Station depends upon team
members throughout the world who emphasize attention to detail and commitment to
safety in their daily jobs. On behalf of the Astronaut Corps I commend these three
exceptional employees who have consistently taken extra measures to insure the safety
and success of Canadian robotic systems that will enable us to perform critical
Space Station assembly and maintenance tasks, said Currie.
Mike Parfitt, former director Mobile Servicing System at MD Robotics added, these
engineers were selected for this prestigious award for their outstanding contribution
to the International Space Station multi-element testing. They are all vital members
of the Mobile Servicing System team at MD Robotics and are excellent examples of
top class Canadian engineering talent.
Dr. Currie was assigned to NASA in 1987 and became an astronaut in July 1991. Dr.
Currie currently serves as Chief of the Astronaut Office Robotics Branch.
