CSA and MDA Developing Robotics Concepts to Support Future Space Exploration
Saint-Hubert, June 13, 2001 - The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and MacDonald Dettwiler
(TSE:MDA) subsidiary, MD Robotics, announce a $2.5M co-funded project to develop
concepts for low-mass, low-power and low-cost manipulators for use in future planetary
exploration missions.
"Investment in cutting edge technology development reinforces Canada's leadership
and innovation in space robotics and supports our potential participation in future
space exploration missions," said the Honourable Brian Tobin, Minister of Industry
and Minister responsible for the Canadian Space Agency.
Daniel Friedmann, MDA President and CEO added, "We are extremely excited to be involved
in the development of planetary exploration robotics. We commend the government
for its continued commitment to Canada's pioneering efforts in space. These investments
will also open up growing opportunities in commercial markets requiring this advanced
technology."
"This activity demonstrates the commitment of MD Robotics to remain the world space
robotics leader. It will prepare Canada to play a key role in international missions
as the world space community focuses its attention on the exploration of Mars and
other targets in our solar system," stated Dr. Christian Sallaberger, Director of
Space Exploration at MD Robotics.
As the use of space develops and new frontiers are explored, the demand for robotic
devices continues to grow. Robots will be the early explorers and builders, developing
the infrastructure for future manned exploration missions.
