Japanese Mission enabled by MDA Communication Subsystems
Montreal, Qc. - MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd., a leading
provider of satellite systems is pleased to have contributed to the H-11 Transfer
Vehicle (HTV) mission launched on September 10, 2009.
The HTV is an orbit transfer vehicle designed to transport cargo such as supplies
and scientific experiments to the International Space Station (ISS). MDA in Montreal
designed and built the communication subsystems on both the transfer vehicle and
the Space Station for the HTV mission. These systems provide Telecommand, telemetry
and Ranging for the spacecraft from launch to eventual docking with the ISS.
On board the HTV spacecraft are two MDA In-Orbit System (IOS) Transponders and also
the Omni directional s-band antenna. There are also two Prox Link System (PLS) Transponders
and a dedicated S-band antenna that will be used to communicate with PROX (proximity)
transponders installed on the Japanese Experimental Module (JEM) on space station.
The PLS system is used for the final approach to the space station prior to final
docking of the HTV module.
These units were all designed, manufactured and tested in our Montreal facility
using MDA's world renowned expertise and state of the art facilities at Ste Anne
de Bellevue.
MDA is proud to be an on-going Canadian participant in the International Space Station
program.
