MDA's Antennas aboard Another Communication Satellite

Montreal, Qc. - MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd., a leading provider of satellite systems is proud to have contributed to the Amazonas 2 program, a powerful satellite that will provide a full range of telecommunication services to North and South America.

The satellite was successfully launched on Thursday October 2, 2009 from Kourou using an Ariane-5ECA launcher.

MDA's Montreal operation was responsible for the design, manufacturing and testing of two antennas for the spacecraft. Both antennas, one Ku-band and one C-band, are located on the East side of the satellite. They will offer up to 54 channels and ensure the transmission and reception of the communication signals between the satellite and the earth. The C-Band antenna utilizes an innovative wideband feed network for both receive and transmit functions to save mass and cost while providing improved performance.

The Amazonas 2 mission will increase the capacity offered by Hispasat, a leader in the broadcast and distribution of content in Spanish and Portuguese using more than 1,100 radio and television channels.
